The Retail King: Richard LIu

Richard Qiangdong Liu is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of JD.com—a Chinese e-commerce company with its headquarters in Beijing. Liu started the company as a brick and mortar business known as Jingdong and 360buy Ltd in 1998. By 2003, the company had expanded its operations to Shanghai and Shenyang while its annual revenue was in the environs of $9 million. In 2004, Lui started JD.com as an online extension of his business.

JD has built its own national logistics system to address the logistics challenge in China. Before JD’s initiative, people in rural areas had to travel to town centers to buy goods, and pay more for them because there were no logistics networks that reached their homes. Today, the JD network boasts of 3,210 delivery and pickup stations in 1,862 Chinese counties—about two-thirds of all counties in the country.

JD.com is China’s leading company in terms of the volume of online transactions. It is the third-largest internet company in the world. In May 2014, JD.com was listed on the NASDAQ. JD.com is the first Chinese Internet company to be named in the Fortune 500.

Richard Liu earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the People’s University of China in 1996. He also has an EMBA degree from the China Europe International Business School.

Richard Liu received the prestigious “2011 China Economic Person of the Year” from CCTV.
He received the “2011 Chinese Business Leader’’ and Fortune China’s “2012 Chinese Businessman.” His name is in Fortune’s list of the “World’s Greatest Leaders.” He is also a frequent speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
