Richard Liu, the founder of jd.com, worked hard to ensure that his business attains the success it enjoys today. After completing his studies at Renmin University, he joined the China Europe International Business School, where he completed his EMBA program. He eventually began his career at Japan Life, a leading herbal supplement firm where he ended up being the Director of computer and service.
Liu later decided to start his business, and this where the Jingdong idea was born. The business began as a small stall that sold and distributed magneto-optical products. Richard differentiated his business from his close competitors by offering authentic products and was always reliable. His commitment to better his customers’ experience helped the company grow to leading retail store with over 12 chain stores in Shenyang, Shanghai, and Beijing.
Even with the success he gained with the different electronic outlets, he was forced to close his operation in 2003 following the SARS pandemic. With the temporary closure of his business, he saw an opportunity online and began advertising his products on bulletin boards. Even after reopening his physical store, he saw great potential in the online business, and he resorted to launching his online business store in January 2004.
Richard Liu was dedicated to ensuring success for his business, and after the launch of his online operation, he handles client’s inquiries himself and even made deliveries for some time. This was an important cause for him to pursue because it helped him get to know about his client base, given that marketing and big data weren’t available at the time to help him in this endeavor.
With the continuous growth of his online operation, he decided to launch a national logistic system that helped to handle the ever-growing popularity of JD. In 2014, the logistic subsidiary of JD had already launched 3,200 pickups and delivery stations in over 1,800 counties.
