On Chip Rosenbloom’s Bronco Billy

Bronco Billy debuted as a film back in 1980. It was produced and written by Dennis Hackin, who later began to reimagine the film as a musical production. Hackin contacted Chip Rosenbloom and John Torres to begin working on the play’s musical elements, which the pair began working on immediately. The play debuted in 2019 with the Skylight Theatre Company. According to cultmtl.com, the production would be called Bronco Billy- The Musical. The musical tells the story of a modern-day cowboy (played in the film by Clint Eastwood) named Billy. Billy is the owner of a traveling Wild West freak show of sorts, a show which Billy struggles to keep afloat. The humorous musical also includes a love story between Billy and the runaway daughter of a Manhattan fortune named Antoinette Lily. She’s the heir of a chocolate company running from her past who runs right into Billy’s arms at a chance meeting at a gas station. The production was a hit which the LA Times praised as telling wistfully the story of what happens when dreamers follow their passion, making the world just a little bit better in the process. Bronco Billy is just one part of Chip Rosenbloom’s successful career in theatrical production.
