Looking At The Trend, Innovation is More Likely To Be Destruction Than Creation, Richard DeVaul

By way of numerous examples that seem unopposed, the legendary and perhaps the master of creation, Richard DeVaul has continued to support his notion that innovation is actually the destruction not the creation of new ideas and products.

Richard DeVaul advocates for a change in this trend. He is a progressive thinker who serves as the founding partner and consulting CTO for HyperSolve. DeVaul graduated from Media Lab at MIT, where he developed a computational graphic design program. He also worked on creating a wearable memory support device for his dissertation.

According to Richard DeVaul, the first example that is close home that will help any right-thinking entrepreneur into believing that the term innovation has been used improperly is with the case of Kodak. By using the photography firm, Richard DeVaul argues that when a company fails to defend its ‘innovation’, it actually means it has destroyed its own patent.

Richard DeVaul was speaking of Kodak’s 1975 product. In his argument, the renowned PhD holder in MIT Media Lab said that Kodak created the world first ever digital camera that was self-contained. After a short period of time, which many can argue is long, in 2012, top managers at the company declared that the firm was bankruptcy. While citing the reason for its bankruptcy, in part, the company said it had found it hard to compete in the market. In his reasoning, the failure for Kodak to defend a product it had proudly produced a few years earlier citing stiff competition was in itself the misuse of the term innovation thus complete destruction of the idea.

In recent years, Richard DeVaul says, “The term innovation has been used so much simply to mean creation but when you look at the so-called creations, they last for a few days and vanish to thin air. That should not be the correct use of the term innovation.” The business executive argues that as the world is now led by young entrepreneurs, a lot needs to be done to change the narrative and according to Richard DeVaul, the best way is by starting to understand the real meaning of certain terminologies used in the market.
