Why Vulnerability Can Make Great Leaders? By Bo Parfet, Founder and CEO at Denali Venture Philanthropy

I love the idea of vulnerability as it relates to life lessons. Vulnerability is a powerful word because, without it, we couldn’t have love, trust, or relationships of all kinds (personal, professional, and otherwise) – Which are so crucial for a full life!

And the list does go on. Without vulnerability, how could we relate to others? How could we be friends? How could we ever have love in our lives (romantic or otherwise)? We can’t, and it’s a sad thing, really.

Bo Parfet believes vulnerability is the key to a real connection with your team when it comes to being a leader. Think about the most influential people you know in your life. The ones who are really getting things done and their teams are left wanting more. Think about why they are effective. It’s because they are vulnerable with their teams.

The trust that is created by vulnerability – that genuine “I’m not perfect, but I know what we’re trying to accomplish, and I need your help in order for this thing to really be special” – is the kind of trust that will carry your team through the tough times. Your vulnerability, and the transparency and authenticity that follow, will be the glue that holds your team together.

Bo Parfet suggests this: Vulnerability is good – vulnerability is even necessary for one to be the kind of leader that people want to follow. That’s not an easy thing, but it is essential.

Here‘s to hoping that we all become more vulnerable as leaders this year and in years to come.
